How to live in a sustainable way is a key theme found in many folktales from cultures all around the world. That this message is so prevalent tells us the importance that was placed upon it; the degree to which societies believed it was necessary to teach this lesson to their children. Learning how to live in a sustainable way means we have to change our attitude, both toward the natural world and toward the people living in it.
Tales to Sustain
Earth Shadow Theatre's first main puppetry project was supported by the Peak District National Park Sustainable Development Fund. During June 2009 we performed to over 1000 children in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire and delivered workshops to over 300. We have also collaborated with the Sheffield Children's Festival.

As a community musician, Matt has many years experience of engaging young and old alike. Using story as a foundation, Matt has helped many people come together, making music and telling tales along the way. Matt has lots of stories in his head and has been taught music from many of the world's cultures - experience that shines a unique light upon the stage of Earth Shadow Theatre.

Simply bursting at the seams with creativity, Orla has found that Shadow Puppetry brings together the many facets of her life. Alongside her artwork, she is also a community mediator and qigong instructor, experience that Orla brings to Earth Shadow Theatre's conflict resolution work.
Earth Shadow Theatre is the creation of community artists Matt Laurie and Orla Laurie.
By bringing story, audience and ourselves together we hope to find a little magic...
"Everything blended together so well - music & lighting created atmosphere, mood, wonder and respect. Caused the children to be more aware of green issues and recycling. In this time of economic recession your message is more vital than ever. Keep passing on the old skills of storytelling and crafts before they die out."
Mrs Briddan, KS1 Teacher, Hope Primary School, (Tales to Sustain)
"I thought the puppet show was great! The children were really engaged and all remembered the story. The music was excellent and the children commented so. The workshop was challenging [for Y2] but I feel they got a really good product out of it"
Richard Kirk, Y2 Teacher, Bakewell Infants School, (Charlie Loses his Voice)
"The children were absolutely captivated, engrossed and enthralled."
